Is Android Taking Over?

Thanks to BooDaddy here at PPCGeeks for digging up this information about Androids current standpoint in the cell phone market.

According to CNet, The Nielsen Co. reported today that roughly one in three (32 percent) of smartphones obtained from January to August were powered by Android.  In the same time frame, Apple’s iOS and BlackBerry’s RIM platform were virtually tied for second with 25 and 26 percent, respectively.  If you purchased a new device in the last 6 months we are almost certain, based on the surveys results, the majority of you picked an Android device over an Iphone or Blackberry.

Nielsen’s also published a data chart showing total market share among all smartphone owners dating from January until August. Not surprisingly, BlackBerry is still the overall dominant platform at 31 percent of the market share.   Apple comes in second with 28 percent, and Android continues to increase with currently 19 percent. See the chart below provided by Nielsen themselves to get a better understanding of the explanation.

We do not have details on exactly how Nielsen came up with these percentages but it seems they do their research based on numbers provided by the companies themselves.  PPCGeeks would like to hear what you think about the study and what you think the outcome will be. Will Android take over the smartphone industry? What do you think?
