Apple crossed another milestone – Now the worlds largest handset maker

In the second quarter of 2011 Apple crossed over another major milestone. According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Apple has now surpassed Nokia becoming the largest handset maker in the world, at the current time, in terms of revenue.

“With strong volumes and high wholesale prices, the PC vendor has successfully captured revenue leadership of the total handset market in less than four years,” analyst Alex Spektor said.

Since January Nokia’s revenue has slowly been shrinking while Apple has continued to grow. Now Apple is ahead of Nokia by more than $2billion in revenue. We think this has something to do with the iPhone, wouldn’t you agree? iPhone sales for Apple continue to grow at an astronomical rate, as sales this past quarter were the company’s best ever with 18.65 million units sold.

While Apple is doing very well it seems Nokia is struggling a little bit. Nokia got rid of their CEO and made Microsoft veteran Stephen Elop their new Chief Executive. He’s made some brave moves in hopes to help the handset maker including making the decision to abandon the “burning” Symbian platform and then adopt Microsoft’s Windows Phone for its new handsets. Nokia plans to transition to Microsoft’s mobile operating system this year and next.

Does this surprise you? Did you expect Apple to pass Nokia? Do you think Android will ever be at the top? Let us know what you think in the comment box below.
