UDPATE:
During our Podcast last night wideawake, Laos101 and a few others mentioned this event and their beliefs. Most of them agreed that this could possible be a scam. Guess what, shortly after PCMag reported the same thoughts.
PCMag reports today that a source within Motorola told the publication that the man’s claims are likely false. While PCMag’s source isn’t involved with the investigation and has not inspected the device personally, he has his own opinion, as we all do/will. He claims that the DROID 2 in question, the guy didn’t notice the glass had cracked so when he put it to his ear, he cut himself.
PCMag’s source goes on to say, “The only things that could explode in a phone would have resulted in a phone that did not work, yet this phone worked. And there was no explosive damage to the device (things inside blown outward, etc).” Motorola still has not publicly addressed the incident any further than the first statement we reported in the original article.
What do you think about these opinions? We aren’t saying anyone’s wrong or right here but it’s beginning to get interesting. We will hopefully hear from Motorola and get more details on this event.

END OF UPDATE
A Texas resident and owner of a Motorola Droid 2 was rushed to the hospital yesterday morning when his phone exploded in his ear. Aron Embry was at Ray Elementary in Cedar Hill when the phone decided to blow up in his ear. Sadly, the device is only two days old!
The man said he had just finished a call when he said he heard a loud “pop.” He then felt something trickling down his face, blood. Aron was immediately taken to the emergency room at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas where he received four stitches but thankfully there was no hearing loss.
Family members said they plan to contact the manufacturer of the phone and Verizon about the incident. Motorola has since issued a statement regarding the incident:
“Motorola’s priority is, and always has been the safety of our customers, and all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety. We will reach out to the consumer and investigate this thoroughly.”
Keep in mind this does happen to more than just this device. In the past we’ve seen it with a few different devices (click here and here) so lets not bash the Motorola Droid 2 too much. We will keep our eyes open for what more Motorola will have to say. Hopefully they will find a solution and have the problem solved asap! For now, we can discuss what you think may have caused such an explosion? Do you think it’s the screen or speaker? Let us know what you think about this.
