Wal-Mart announced yesterday that it will be joining the cell phone business by providing two plans with limited phones. It was developed in cooperation with TracFone Wireless and has been running a pilot program since last summer in about 234 stores, but will now be nationwide.
They will offer 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts, and 30mb of data for $30/month. The 2nd plan will be unlimited voice, data, and SMS for $45/month. These seem too good to be true, but with their phone selection, I’m not sure how much competition there will actually be. If they offered some high end phones then there could be some real competition, and perhaps cause the major providers to lower their prices.
